MYSTICAL. MAGICAL. THE RUGGED CHARM OF WESTERN RAJASTHAN

Poised on the frontier of the Thar Desert, Jodhpur rises from the dunes, a magnificent testament to its storied past. Named for the indigo that tints the walls of traditional dwellings in its historic precinct, the “Blue City” is a maze of by-lanes, bazaars and hidden courtyards, tucked away out of sight. Historic havelis, ancient stepwells, and regal monuments tell the city’s tale. Meherangarh Fort’s massive ramparts dominate the skyline, while the elegant dome and turrets of Umaid Bhawan Palace gaze down over the city.
Stroll through the markets where shops sell local handicrafts such as dhurries, jewellery, jootis (shoes), and lacquerware. You’ll also find merchants selling antiques and beautiful brassware. Head into the desert wilderness on an adventurous 4X4 ride into the dunes, before heading back to Balsamand Palace and its serene lake at dusk, as the sun sets over the city.
Drive west into the desert towards India’s border. Pause en route to visit an ancient Jain temple complex at Ossian, with a beautiful façade carved out of stone. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local farm or café, and your drive through the rugged countryside, until you reach Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer’s fortress is sheer poetry in stone, its sandstone ramparts glimmering in the sun. With several courtyards, gardens and structures within its walls, it’s a stunning piece of living heritage, where people continue to reside even today!
Stroll through the bazaars, full of atmosphere, and don’t be surprised if you find a camel basking in the sun! Beautiful architecture, gorgeous arts and crafts, and sweet treats like the sugary roshagolla, a local dessert, are just some of the things you’ll encounter as you meander through the streets. Ride out into the dunes on camelback, as the locals do, and watch the sun dip down towards the horizon.
Wild and rugged, the countryside outside Jaisalmer has an untamed quality. It is also home to several unusual species of wildlife, such as the endangered Great Indian Bustard, Black Buck, and Desert Fox. Don’t miss a visit to the Desert National Park, a beautiful nature reserve which has a unique collection of ancient fossils. Encounter tribal settlements, nomadic herdsmen, and village women as they walk home from the fields. As evening sets in, you’ll hear the haunting music of the local tribes carrying on the wind…
From Jaisalmer, continue exploring rural Rajasthan as you drive to Rohet, a village with unrivalled charm. Take a scenic village walk. Discover the culinary secrets of Rohet’s royal family or head out on horseback into the desert to explore some of its best-kept secrets. Then continue south towards the magnificent temples of Ranakpur, and the Jawai reservoir, known to be the haunt of leopards, migratory birds, and the largest crocodiles you will ever see! Enjoy a couple of nights in this charming locale, with its craggy cliffs and undulating landscape, while you stay in a luxurious tented camp.
Hike up through the forest to Kumbalgarh Fort, one of the most formidable Rajput fortresses, before heading south to Udaipur, the “White City”, a serene oasis. Magnificent palaces, sacred shrines, gorgeous gardens and stunning lakes make Udaipur exquisitely romantic. Its luxurious hotels are idyllic, and one can simply lounge and soak up stunning views of the city or indulge oneself at the spa.
