After a cultural orientation in Hanoi, the trip shifts into the Sapa highlands, where multi-hour treks connect small ethnic villages, with two nights spent directly in family homestays rather than hotels. The route then continues further north to Hoang Su Phi, a remote and dramatically terraced region, before returning to Hanoi. It’s a trip suited to travellers who want genuine trail time and direct contact with Vietnam’s hill-tribe communities, balanced by comfortable bookend stays in Hanoi.

After settling into Hanoi’s colonial charm, the journey heads north for several days of guided trekking through the Nam Ho, Nam Pen, and Pieng Lao valleys, with overnight homestays among the Hmong, Red Dao, and Ha Nhi communities. The route continues to the dramatic terraced landscapes of Hoang Su Phi before returning to Hanoi to conclude the trip.

    Itinerary

    Arrival in Hanoi

    Upon arrival in Hanoi, you will be warmly welcomed by your local tour guide and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy some leisure time to relax and recover after your long flight journey.

    In the afternoon, begin your introduction to Vietnam’s capital with a visit to Ba Dinh Square, the historic political heart of Hanoi. From the outside, admire the impressive Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the final resting place of President Ho Chi Minh, before continuing to the iconic One Pillar Pagoda, a unique architectural masterpiece renowned for its distinctive design inspired by a lotus blossom rising from a single stone pillar.

    Continue to Hoan Kiem Lake, one of Hanoi’s most famous landmarks and a symbol of the city. Stroll around the tranquil lake and visit the charming Ngoc Son Temple, located on a small island and connected by the elegant red The Huc Bridge.

    Conclude your first day in Hanoi with a special welcome dinner served in a beautifully restored colonial-style house, offering an elegant introduction to Vietnamese cuisine and hospitality.

    Hanoi to Sapa

    After breakfast at the hotel, depart Hanoi and journey towards the spectacular northern mountains of Vietnam. Travel along the modern highway, enjoying ever-changing landscapes of lush valleys, winding roads, and dramatic mountain scenery.

    Continue into the heart of the highlands, where you will embark on a short trekking experience through traditional mountain villages nestled among terraced rice fields. Away from the main tourist routes, this peaceful walk offers an authentic glimpse into rural life, with opportunities to meet local communities and learn about their traditions, customs, and daily activities.

    After the trek, continue your journey towards Sapa, one of Vietnam’s most picturesque mountain towns. Upon arrival, take a leisurely walk through the charming town centre, exploring the local market and visiting the iconic Sapa Stone Church, a historic landmark reflecting the town’s French colonial heritage.

    Enjoy the fresh mountain air and the unique atmosphere of this beautiful highland destination.

    Trekking in Nam Ho Valley

    After breakfast at the hotel, take a short transfer to Muong Hum, the starting point of today’s trekking adventure. Begin the walk by following a broad trail that gradually climbs for approximately 20 minutes along the slopes of Den Thang Mountain, offering beautiful views of the surrounding highlands.

    Continue along a scenic mountain path at higher elevation, passing through cultivated farmland and small settlements of the Hmong communities. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the magnificent Nam Ho Valley, with its terraced landscapes, mountain scenery, and traditional villages.

    Leave the main trail and follow a narrower path descending towards the valley floor, where you will reach a peaceful stream and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature.

    After lunch, cross the Nam Ho Stream and continue trekking along small countryside trails through expansive rice terraces and lush tea plantations scattered across the slopes of Khu Chu Phin Mountain. The route winds through a beautiful mix of forest, farmland, and remote villages before arriving at Lang Moi Village, home to approximately 40 Hmong families.

    Experience the warm hospitality of the local community and gain insight into their traditional way of life. In the evening, enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner featuring local specialties and spend the night in a traditional Hmong family homestay, creating an authentic cultural experience in the heart of northern Vietnam.

    Trekking in Nam Pen Valley

    After breakfast, begin today’s trekking adventure along scenic countryside trails, following a dirt path through the spectacular Nam Pen Valley towards Ki Quan San Village, home to the White Hmong community.

    During the trek, visit local homes and farmland to gain insight into the traditional lifestyle, customs, and daily activities of the villagers. Continue along a small paved pathway to reach the peaceful hidden village of Nam Pen, located at the foot of Nhiu Co San Mountain. Enjoy a simple local lunch in the village before continuing the journey.

    In the afternoon, trek through a lush natural forest along narrow mountain trails leading to a remote hamlet of the Red Dao (Zao) ethnic group, situated high on the mountainside overlooking the beautiful Nam Pen Valley. Descend through Ki Quan San Tren Village, where you will have the opportunity to visit local homes and meet the Red Dao people.

    Learn about their unique traditions, distinctive cultural identity, and traditional way of life while experiencing their warm hospitality. The remainder of the day is free to relax and explore the peaceful surroundings of the village.

    In the evening, enjoy a home-cooked dinner prepared by a local family and spend the night in a traditional wooden house, offering an authentic cultural experience in the northern mountains of Vietnam.

    Trekking in Pieng Lao Valley / Sapa

    After breakfast at the homestay, begin your final trekking experience through the beautiful Pieng Lao Valley, a region renowned for its spectacular terraced rice fields, peaceful villages, and rich ethnic diversity.

    Follow scenic village trails for approximately three hours through the fertile valley, home to the Day ethnic community who live in charming settlements along the Ta Loi Stream. Walk along the riverside path and cross a suspension bridge to reach Phin Pao Village, where you will discover the traditional lifestyle and culture of the Dao (Zao) people.

    Enjoy lunch at a local family home before continuing your trek along narrow countryside paths winding between rice terraces. Cross the Ta Le Stream and continue uphill through Ta Le Village, inhabited by the Red Dao (Zao) community, before reaching Sin Chai Village, home to the Ha Nhi ethnic group.

    Take time to explore traditional houses and meet the Ha Nhi people, learning about their unique customs, heritage, and way of life. The Ha Nhi are one of Vietnam’s smaller ethnic communities, with a rich cultural identity preserved through generations.

    Return to your base in Muong Hum Valley, where you will have time to freshen up and relax before continuing your journey to Sapa. Travel via Ban Khoang and Ta Giang Phinh, with short stops along the way to admire the spectacular mountain scenery and capture memorable photographs.

    Arrive in Sapa in the late afternoon and check in at your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to relax or explore the town at your own pace.

    Sapa / Hoang Su Phi

    After breakfast at the hotel, begin the day with a visit to Sapa’s local market, where you can experience the vibrant atmosphere and discover the traditional products, handicrafts, and daily life of the local ethnic communities.

    Continue your journey towards Hoang Su Phi, travelling through some of northern Vietnam’s most spectacular landscapes. Along the way, admire breathtaking scenery featuring dramatic mountain ranges, deep valleys, winding streams, lush forests, plum orchards, and magnificent terraced rice fields carved into the hillsides.

    Several scenic stops will be made en route, allowing you to appreciate the panoramic views and capture memorable photographs of this remarkable region. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant during the journey.

    Continue to Thong Nguyen Village, where you will take a leisurely walk through the village, meet local residents, and gain insight into their traditional lifestyle and culture.

    Arrive at Pan Hou Ecolodge, a peaceful retreat nestled among the mountains and forests of Hoang Su Phi. Enjoy the tranquil surroundings and authentic atmosphere of this unique eco-lodge.

    Hoang Su Phi

    After breakfast at the lodge, take time to enjoy the spectacular mountain views from this peaceful hilltop setting before beginning today’s trekking adventure through the magnificent landscapes of Hoang Su Phi.

    Set out on foot through remote mountain trails, discovering some of northern Vietnam’s most breathtaking scenery. Along the way, admire the impressive terraced rice fields cascading down the hillsides and blending harmoniously with the surrounding tea plantations, creating a stunning natural landscape.

    Continue to Nam Hong Village, home to the Red Dao ethnic community. Visit the village and learn about the traditions, customs, and daily life of the local people. Enjoy lunch at a local family’s home, experiencing warm hospitality and authentic regional cuisine.

    In the afternoon, continue trekking towards Nam Ai Village, where you will meet members of the Long Dress Dao community, known for their distinctive traditional clothing and rich cultural heritage. Take time to interact with the villagers and discover more about their unique way of life.

    In the late afternoon, return to the main road and transfer back to Pan Hou Ecolodge. Relax and enjoy dinner in the tranquil surroundings of the lodge.
