This itinerary moves through Cambodia in stages, each with a distinct character. The first week is genuinely off the beaten path: forested highlands, river islands, and ethnic minority villages in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, including a remote overnight homestay with no electricity at Preah Rumkel. The itinerary then turns towards Cambodia’s cultural core, with the clifftop temple of Preah Vihear followed by five nights based in Siem Reap to explore the full breadth of the Angkor complex at a relaxed pace, including lesser-visited sites well beyond the main temple circuit. The journey concludes in Battambang, a slower-paced riverside town, before a final scenic drive back to Phnom Penh.
Beyond the temples, experience the tranquil beauty of Tonle Sap Lake on a private boat cruise, visiting floating villages where you will witness traditional livelihoods thriving on the water. This unique ecosystem provides insights into Cambodia’s close relationship with its natural surroundings.

Upon arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your local guide and driver, who will assist you with your transfer to your hotel.
This evening, enjoy an authentic Khmer dining experience at Romdeng, a renowned charity restaurant set within a beautifully restored colonial villa. Operated as a social enterprise, Romdeng provides hospitality training and career opportunities for former street children while serving exceptional traditional Cambodian cuisine.
Day 2 Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Cambodia’s vibrant capital with a visit to Wat Phnom, the iconic hilltop temple regarded as the birthplace of Phnom Penh.
Continue to the National Museum, home to one of the world’s finest collections of Khmer art and sculpture. Its impressive galleries showcase an exceptional array of Angkorian and pre-Angkorian artifacts, offering fascinating insights into Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
Just across the road, visit the magnificent Royal Palace, constructed in 1866 during the reign of King Norodom under the French Protectorate. Within the palace grounds lies the celebrated Silver Pagoda, renowned for its gleaming silver-tiled floor and an extraordinary collection of Buddha statues crafted from gold, silver, crystal, and other precious materials.
This afternoon, gain a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s modern history with a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Once a secondary school, the site was transformed by the Khmer Rouge into the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21), where thousands of Cambodians were imprisoned and tortured. Although a deeply moving experience, the museum provides essential historical context and a profound appreciation of the resilience of the Cambodian people.
Day 3 Mayura Hill Hotel & Resort, Sen Monorom

After breakfast, depart Phnom Penh and journey by road to Mondulkiri Province, one of Cambodia’s most remote and scenic regions. The drive takes you through picturesque countryside, rural villages, and stretches of unspoiled landscapes, with parts of the route traversing unpaved roads that offer an authentic glimpse of the country’s untouched wilderness.
Upon arrival in Sen Monorom, take time to explore the charming provincial town before continuing to Bou Sra Waterfall, located approximately 40 km away. Widely regarded as Cambodia’s largest and most spectacular waterfall, Bou Sra cascades through lush forest, creating a breathtaking natural setting.
Later, ascend to a nearby hilltop for panoramic views of Mondulkiri’s rolling, forest-covered hills, often referred to as the “Sea of Forest” for their wave-like appearance stretching to the horizon. Conclude the day at Phnom Dak Reimon, where you can enjoy a magnificent sunset overlooking the surrounding highlands before returning to your hotel.
Day 4 Mayura Hill Hotel & Resort, Sen Monorom

After breakfast, visit the Elephant Valley Project, an award-winning ethical elephant sanctuary nestled in the forests near Sen Monorom. Dedicated to the welfare and conservation of rescued elephants, the sanctuary provides a safe, natural environment where animals that have suffered from overwork, injury, or mistreatment can live peacefully.
Unlike traditional elephant camps, the Elephant Valley Project promotes responsible wildlife tourism. There is no elephant riding or direct interaction; instead, visitors observe the elephants in their natural habitat while learning about their individual stories, behaviour, and the sanctuary’s conservation efforts.
Accompanied by experienced local guides and mahouts, enjoy a guided walk through the surrounding forest to observe resident elephant families as they forage, bathe, and roam freely. Along the way, gain valuable insight into the unique relationship between the local Bunong community, their elephants, and the region’s rich biodiversity.
Return to your hotel in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
Day 5 Soriyabori Resort, Kaoh Trong
Koh Trong Island (Kratie)
After breakfast, depart Sen Monorom and travel by road to the charming riverside town of Kratie, located on the banks of the mighty Mekong River.
Upon arrival, board a traditional local boat for the short crossing to Koh Trong Island, a peaceful island that offers an authentic glimpse into rural Cambodian life. Largely untouched by modern development, the island is known for its tranquil villages, lush orchards, and scenic countryside.
Explore the island at a leisurely pace by bicycle or aboard a traditional horse cart, passing local homes, fruit plantations, and rice fields. Visit the island’s historic pagoda and take part in a meaningful tree-planting initiative, a community-led conservation project established to restore the island’s once-abundant forest cover.
The remainder of the day is at leisure to soak in the island’s relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the natural beauty of this unique Mekong destination.
Day 6 Terres Rouges Lodge, Banlung

After breakfast on Koh Trong Island, return by boat to the mainland and continue your journey to Banlung, the capital of Cambodia’s remote Ratanakiri Province.
En route, embark on a scenic boat excursion along the Mekong River in search of the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. These endangered dolphins are one of Cambodia’s most treasured wildlife species and are best observed in their natural river habitat near Kratie.
Continue to O’Russey Kandal, a community-based ecotourism site known for its picturesque river rapids and peaceful natural surroundings. Enjoy time to relax, explore the area, or take a refreshing swim before continuing your drive to Banlung.
Upon arrival, visit the enchanting Yeak Laom Lake, located approximately 5 km southeast of the town centre. Formed within the crater of an extinct volcano over 4,000 years ago, this remarkably clear, circular lake reaches depths of around 50 metres and is surrounded by protected forest. A well-maintained walking trail encircles the lake, providing the perfect opportunity for a leisurely stroll while admiring the area’s pristine natural beauty.
Day 7 Terres Rouges Lodge, Banlung

After breakfast, travel to Kalai Village, a small indigenous settlement located between Voensai and Banlung. Home to the Kreung people, the village offers an authentic introduction to the traditions and daily life of one of Cambodia’s ethnic minority communities.
Although parts of the surrounding landscape have been affected by agriculture and deforestation, significant areas of pristine tropical forest remain protected. Today’s visit supports community-based ecotourism, helping to provide sustainable livelihoods for local residents while encouraging the conservation of the region’s remarkable natural heritage.
Set out on the Kalai Jungle Trek, a relatively easy guided walk suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness. Before entering the forest, pause to admire sweeping views across the lush jungle canopy. Continue beneath the towering trees as your guide introduces you to the area’s rich biodiversity, native plant life, and the cultural significance of the forest to the Kreung community.
Throughout the trek, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this unspoiled wilderness while gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of preserving Cambodia’s remaining rainforest ecosystems.
Return to Banlung in the afternoon.
Day 8 Own Arrangement
Overnight Travel – Preah Rumkel
After breakfast, depart for Preah Rumkel, a unique community-based tourism destination situated within the Mekong’s flooded forest area and close to the habitat of the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. This remote riverside location offers an authentic experience surrounded by untouched nature and local village life.
Upon arrival, enjoy lunch before beginning your afternoon exploration.
Board a traditional boat for a scenic one-hour cruise along the Mekong River, taking in the beautiful landscapes and tranquil surroundings. Continue your journey to Sopheak Mitt Waterfalls, where you will disembark and take a 3.3 km walk through a combination of forest trails and local pathways. During the dry season, from December to May, the Mekong River is at its lowest level, revealing crystal-clear waters and impressive views of the river landscape.
On the return boat journey to Preah Rumkel, keep an eye out for the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins, which can occasionally be spotted swimming in their natural Mekong habitat.
Spend the night experiencing local hospitality at a traditional village homestay, offering a genuine insight into rural Cambodian life.

During the high-water season, enjoy a local boat excursion through the wetlands, offering the chance to discover the region’s unique biodiversity and observe the natural beauty of this protected environment.

Begin the day with a visit to the magnificent Preah Vihear Temple, one of Cambodia’s most spectacular cultural landmarks. Perched dramatically on a 525-metre cliff in the Dangrek Mountain Range, the temple enjoys breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the plains of Thailand to the north and Cambodia to the south, with visibility extending for nearly 100 km in each direction.
Beyond its extraordinary location, Preah Vihear is an architectural masterpiece showcasing the brilliance of Khmer civilisation. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, the temple offers a fascinating insight into Cambodia’s ancient history and spiritual heritage.
Continue your journey towards Siem Reap via Anlong Veng, a quiet town known for its role as the final stronghold of the Khmer Rouge leadership. Visit Ta Mok’s House, the former residence of one of the movement’s senior figures, which provides a sobering perspective on Cambodia’s more recent history. Depending on timing, there may also be an opportunity to visit Pol Pot’s grave and Ta Mok’s cliff house in the Dangrek Mountains.

Wake up early, enjoy breakfast at your hotel, and prepare for a full day of discovery among the magnificent temples of Angkor, one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Begin your exploration at Angkor Thom, the last capital of the great Khmer Empire under the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Enclosed by an impressive 8-metre-high defensive wall, this ancient city reveals the grandeur of the Khmer civilisation. Continue to the remarkable Bayon Temple, located at the heart of Angkor Thom. This 12th-century masterpiece is renowned for its iconic stone faces and beautifully preserved bas-reliefs depicting scenes of daily life, historical events, and religious stories.
Continue to Ta Prohm Temple, one of the most atmospheric temples within the Angkor complex. Unlike many other monuments, Ta Prohm has been intentionally preserved with much of its original jungle setting, where towering trees and sprawling roots intertwine with the ancient stone ruins, creating a truly magical and photogenic landscape.
In the afternoon, discover the legendary Angkor Wat, the largest and most celebrated monument of the Angkor complex. Built in the early 12th century, this architectural masterpiece is distinguished by its three-tiered design and five iconic lotus-shaped towers rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape. A symbol of Cambodia and a highlight of any visit to Siem Reap, Angkor Wat offers countless opportunities for unforgettable photographs and cultural discovery.
This evening, enjoy a memorable performance by Phare, The Cambodian Circus, an inspiring social enterprise that combines traditional Cambodian arts with contemporary circus, theatre, music, and storytelling. Founded to support disadvantaged youth, Phare provides professional training and opportunities for young Cambodian artists while presenting powerful performances that explore modern life and social themes.
Day 12 Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang, Siem Reap

Today, embark on an adventurous journey to Phnom Kulen Mountain by motorbike, either riding independently or travelling as a passenger with an experienced local rider. Steeped in history and spirituality, Phnom Kulen is considered the birthplace of the Angkor Empire, where King Jayavarman II declared the beginning of the Khmer Empire in the 9th century. It is also one of Cambodia’s most sacred destinations, believed to be one of the places where Buddha is said to have set foot.
Explore the mountain’s natural and cultural treasures, including a picturesque waterfall and the impressive reclining Buddha carved into the sandstone. Beyond these well-known attractions, venture deeper into the surrounding wilderness along hidden jungle trails and remote back routes, discovering lesser-known archaeological sites away from the main tourist paths.
Continue through the forest to uncover ancient temples and remarkable stone carvings, including the fascinating elephant and lion statues hidden among the jungle landscape. This immersive experience offers a unique combination of adventure, nature, and Cambodia’s rich spiritual heritage.

Today, depart Siem Reap for an exploration of some of the region’s most fascinating and lesser-known archaeological treasures.
Begin with a visit to Kbal Spean, meaning “Head of the River,” a remarkable archaeological site hidden within the Phnom Kulen jungle. Follow a scenic forest trail to discover the sacred river carvings, where hundreds of lingas and other Hindu symbols were carved directly into the sandstone riverbed during the Angkor period. The site also features a beautiful natural waterfall, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
Continue to Banteay Srei, often known as the “Citadel of Women,” one of the finest jewels of Khmer architecture. Built in the 10th century from distinctive pink-red sandstone, the temple is celebrated for its exceptionally detailed carvings, intricate decorations, and delicate craftsmanship. Unlike the monumental temples of Angkor, Banteay Srei is smaller in scale yet remarkable for the extraordinary precision of its artistic details.
In the afternoon, travel approximately 65 km from Siem Reap to the remote and atmospheric Beng Mealea Temple. After a short walk through dense jungle, arrive at this spectacular unrestored temple complex, where ancient stone structures remain embraced by nature. Hidden for centuries and only recently made accessible, Beng Mealea offers a true sense of exploration, allowing visitors to wander through atmospheric ruins, overgrown corridors, and collapsed galleries reminiscent of an archaeological adventure.

After breakfast, depart Siem Reap and embark on a scenic boat journey towards Battambang, travelling through the fascinating waterways of Cambodia’s countryside.
The boat route passes via Prek Toal, a renowned wetland area within the Tonlé Sap ecosystem, offering beautiful views of floating villages, traditional fishing communities, and the unique landscapes of life along the lake.
During the dry season, when water levels are too low for the full boat journey, the route will be adjusted. You will take a boat from Chong Kneas to May Chrey before continuing the journey by road to Battambang.
Enjoy the changing scenery and authentic rural experiences along the way as you travel towards Cambodia’s charming riverside city.
Day 15 Battambang Resort, Battambang

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Battambang, Cambodia’s largest rice-producing province and a destination known for its rich culture, colonial charm, and scenic countryside.
Start with a visit to Battambang Market, a vibrant local market filled with colourful displays of fresh fish, meat, vegetables, and tropical fruits. Experience the lively atmosphere and gain insight into the daily routines and traditions of the local community.
Continue with a ride on the famous Bamboo Train, a unique local experience that has become one of Battambang’s most iconic attractions. Originally created by villagers as a simple means of transporting goods along unused railway tracks, these small bamboo platforms offer a fun and memorable journey through the countryside.
Next, visit Wat Ek Phnom, an ancient temple built in 1027 during the reign of King Suryavarman I. Located approximately 14 km from Battambang, the temple is surrounded by peaceful rural landscapes, traditional villages, and smaller historic pagodas. Take time to explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy the warm hospitality of the local residents.
Continue to Phnom Banan, an 11th-century Angkorian mountaintop temple featuring five remaining towers and spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding plains. The climb and scenery provide a rewarding glimpse into Cambodia’s ancient heritage.
On the return journey, visit Phnom Sampeau, a mountain site rich in history and legend. At the summit, explore Wat Sampeau and take in impressive views of the countryside. The area is also home to caves known as the Killing Caves, a solemn reminder of Cambodia’s tragic Khmer Rouge period.
Return to Battambang after a full day of cultural discovery and memorable experiences.
